If you're going to use kinesiotape after or during physical therapy, using this will help it stay in place much longer, especially during these hot Austin summers.
Preparing your skin will keep kinesio tape in place for up to two days longer. The tape isn't cheap so this stuff will save you money in the long run. Also useful for bandages, patches, diabetic monitors, other in home care services etc.
The first thing you should know about this tape is that it was designed to lift and assist tissues. Therefore you should not stretch it fully when applying. Depending on the body part and the issue we're addressing, during and after physical therapy we may stretch it 25% to 75%. It's great for edema reduction, encouraging proper body mechanics, and improving proprioception. However it is terrible for supporting an injury. Kinesio tape is definitely used incorrectly quite often. If you don't already know, just need confirmation or are unsure. We would love to educate and help you in person on the best methods for taping. Call, Text, or email to set up an in-home appointment in Austin today!
This is another item that gets used in strange ways. The goal of this is not to raise your skin 4 inches and leave yourself with a dozen large red polka-dot bruises. For physical therapy we use cups for creating separation between the fascia and myofascial layers. A gentle lift then pulling the skin in different directions can be a great complementary treatment. If you're in Austin, we would be happy to have a session to instruct you on proper usage. This is great for In-home therapy.
We generally don't advise walking or running with these, but they are great for exercising In-home. Having the ability to progress you from 1 lb to 10lb is vital to your recovery in physical therapy.
So many fun things to do on this! Again, the path to recovery is dependent on progressing your physical therapy rehab. We start people standing on this with two feet, then one foot, then with eyes closed, then tossing a ball, then juggling knives during SXSW with your eyes closed... the possibilities are endless! Great to use In-home during your PT sessions.
While we love TENS units during your In-home physical therapy session for pain control, and it is a great alternative to opioids, injections, or surgery, you do need to be careful with these. They should not go near a peacemaker or brain stimulator, should not be used if you are pregnant, have epilepsy, or have reduced sensation. You also should not crank it up until your arm or leg dances on its own. The goal is to feel a tingling sensation that helps turn off the pain receptors. If you are thinking of getting one, we would be very happy to have a session with a licensed physical therapist in the comfort of your own Austin home to instruct on proper operation. We can use ours during your visit if you're not ready to purchase one yet and want to see how it works.
